International Trails Day - June 5, 2010

International Trails Day is an annual celebration of trails to promote trail development, the use of trails and the healthy lifestyle they encourage. It is celebrated each year on the first Saturday in June. This year we celebrate International Trails Day on June 5, 2010.
Interest is growing world wide, and international trail groups are promoting events in their own countries. We invite and encourage the public and the world's trail groups to celebrate and help develop an awareness of trails by posting events in their communities to this site. If you have an event you would like to post, please email the details and your contact information to NS Trails: nstrails@sportnovascotia.ca.

HIKE THE BLUFF WILDERNESS TRAIL HIKING SYSTEM

International Trails Day is an annual celebration of trails to promote the use of trails, a healthy lifestyle, and an awareness and appreciation of our natural surroundings. It takes place each year on the first Saturday in June.

To join in this worldwide celebration, the board members of the Woodens River Watershed Environmental Organisation (WRWEO) invite hikers and walkers in our community to hike a loop or two of The Bluff Wilderness Hiking Trail system on Saturday June 5th 2010. Why not participate in International Trails Day by hiking one of the newly marked, easy-to-follow wilderness trails and experience the pristine natural beauty of a few hours on The Bluff Trail, named one of the best eight urban escapes in Canada by the prestigious magazine, Explore: Canada’s Outdoor Magazine?

Weather permitting, a WRWEO volunteer will be available from 9-11 am to greet hikers at The Bluff Trailhead with maps of the trail system and to answer any relevant questions about hiking in the area.

For directions to The Bluff Trail parking lot, the trailhead and a detailed description of the trail system, go to http://www.wrweo.ca/ and click on Bluff Trail. Enjoy your hike!

NATIONAL PARK HOSTS SECOND ANNUAL GEOCACHE DAY -  CAPE BRETON HIGHLANDS NATIONAL PARK
2nd Annual Geocashing Day

To celebrate International Trails Day and the 125th anniversary of Canada’s national parks system, Cape Breton Highlands National Park and the Atlantic Canada Geocaching Association are hosting the 2nd Annual Geocaching Day, June 5, 2010.

Activities begin on at 10 am at the Cheticamp Visitor Center at the western entrance to the national park with “how to geocache” and wilderness safety workshops. Co-ordinates for the newest park geocache will be released at noon at the event and on the national geocaching association website www.geocaching.com.TheWith the newest addition, Cape Breton Highlands National Park now offers 14 geocaches on 7 trails, in two campgrounds & at a lookoff:

1. Boomer’s Kid Cache is a fun way to discover geocaching while learning about our native tree species in the campgrounds at Chéticamp and Broad Cove.

2. The EcoCache is a series of 5 geocaches located along 17 km of park trails, helping visitors discover places & species of ecological significance in northern Cape Breton.

3. The Middle Head Multi-cache, developed with the Keltic Lodge Resort & the Highlands Links, takes visitors to culturally significant places on the Middle Head peninsula.

4. An Earth Cache is offered in association with the American Geological Society and is accessible to Cabot Trail sightseers along the scenic highway.

Visitors can place their own geo-cache and can find out how on the Parks Canada website (www.pc.gc.ca) or talk to park staff. Special guidelines are in place in consideration of the importance of national parks to all
Canadians.

Geocaching is a modern day “treasure hunt” – a new sport that is growing in popularity with people of all ages. Given the latitudinal and longitudinal co-ordinates, participants use their GPS (Global Positioning System) uni to locate the hidden “cache” – a small box with a logbook to record their visit.

Geocachers need their own GPS unit and a park pass to participate in the event. Park passes give access to Cabot Trail sightseeing within the park, hiking trails, visitor centres, exhibits, beaches, picnic areas,
playgrounds, clean washrooms and more. Early bird annual passes are available until June 30 at 50% off.
