International Trails Day 2011

International Trails Day is an annual celebration of trails to promote trail development, the use of trails and the healthy lifestyle they encourage. It is celebrated each year on the first Saturday in June. This year we celebrate International Trails Day on June 4, 2011.
Interest is growing world wide, and international trail groups are promoting events in their own countries. We invite and encourage the public and the world's trail groups to celebrate and help develop an awareness of trails by posting events in their communities to this site. If you have an event you would like to post, please email the details and your contact information to NS Trails: nstrails@sportnovascotia.ca.

Bike/Cycle Ideas: 30 km ride our entire converted rail (level) rail from the start point north to Gibraltar Rock and back (15 km each way) – OR a 15 km ride: stop half way at the very picturesque Kelly’s Meadow picnic shelter. Relax and walk about as there is plenty of beautiful scenery. You are on the banks of the Musquodoboit River. A winding brook exits Kelly’s Meadow a short distance away– with a sturdy wooden bridge structure allowing our rail trail to continue on toward Gibraltar Rock. You may be lucky enough to see deer, turtles, or fish !! Washrooms are located nearby. – OR a 7 km ride to Turtle Creek Bridge – on the shores of Bayer (not Bayers) Lake. Same as above – lovely scenery, picnic shelter, washrooms. There is even a small beachy area where children are known to splash along the shoreline of Bayer Lake.

Hiking Ideas: There’s lots to chose from: Bayer Lake Loop (Level 1); Admiral Lake Loop (Level 2-3) and demanding Wilderness hiking trails. Call Christian Ruel for more information. Guided hikes can possibly be arranged, on request. For maps & more info re our hiking trails, see our website. Just Google our association name (above).

Walk or Stroll: Prefer just a short walk ? The steel truss bridge over the river is just a few steps from the parking lot; there are scenic rest spots with benches every so often – and the first (southerly) 4 km of our rail trail is wheelchair and stroller friendly !!

Big Bar-B-Que: back at the parking lot (start) at 1:00 thru 2:00 pm. Join other hikers and bikers and share your experiences ! We plan to supply, for a small fee, refreshments, hamburgers, veggie-burgers and possibly some draw prizes !

St. Margaret's Bay Trail
5th Year Ramblers Ride
Saturday, June 4th

Arrangements are in place for a wonderful ITD ride, thanks to Bill Wiggins and the St. Margaret's Bay Trail Team. I am reminded this will be the 5th year the Ramblers have participated.

It is a fun ride, open to Ramblers, guests, including children (must be with parents to supervise). There will be a (free, thanks to the Bike Week Committee) BBQ - hamburgers and veggie burgers as well as soft drinks at rides end, along with bike prizes.

We will meet at 9:45, in the Mariposa parking lot, across from the Irving (washrooms) which is also at the intersection of the # 333 (road to Peggy's Cove) and the # 3 highway, This is located about 400 meters from the Bike & Bean, on the Halifax side. We ask you NOT to park at the Bike & Bean, as this ties up their limited parking over lunch hour - thank you for your consideration.

We will depart at 10am and head towards Hubbards. Each of us will bike at a pace that is comfortable for ourselves. You may return at any time (when you are half tired - ha), or no later than 1 hour and 15 minutes into the ride. In this way we will all be back between 12 and 12:30, our staggered arrival will help the chefs keep up with the demand of "starving" bicyclists. We will also have lots of draw prizes.

Rambler Terry Norman, will serve as your EC for the day. Terry of course has extensive knowledge on the trails of NS, as well as all Canada, having presided over NS Trails for a decade and the past two year with the Canadian Trails Coalition. Terry will also have two friends / guests on the ride - Wendy and Hal Hickey from BC. Wendy and Hal are recently retired, and have started a major bike trip across Canada, using trails only, when available. As I type, they have completed Newfoundland and Cape Breton, and are between Harbour Bouche and Antigonish. Please be sure to extend a hearty Rambler welcome to Hal and Wendy - such fun!

Terry made the following footnote:

"By the way, Hal Hickey has a blog where he posts the highlights from each day of their journey. You can access it at http://www.amicanadian.ca/ "

This ride is doable by all Ramblers - bring a guest or two - the more the merrier! This is a great trail and a fun event.

See you on Saturday and HAPPY BIKE WEEK and IT DAY

Bob White,
Prez, NS Ramblers.
